HOW TO CHOOSE A SUNSCREEN & APPLY ON FACE CORRECTLY?

Skin is somehow fragile yet strong, so it does demand a good balance of care from within. But it's not once-in-a-day-skincare or 10-step-skincare-routine. One can pick the best cleansing, moisturising and anti-aging skincare products, but applying sunscreen is probably the best way to protect skin from numerous aging factors. It is about choosing the right sunscreen from the mayhem of variations available at your disposal.

Usually, the ideology of using sunscreen once a day suffices many minds. This notion has very well taken hold of many. Sunscreen is a film which blocks or absorbs the UVA or UVB rays. The sun emits rays throughout, even during the winter or on cloudy days. The UV radiation damages the skin from within and so the process of skin aging begins. There are 2 main kinds of sunscreen – chemical sunscreen and physical sunscreen. After applying either of these two types, they both have their own mechanisms and filters to protect the skin from further damage.

Now, this is just one part of the puzzle. Later, which type of sunscreen for a particular skin type and many such questions come to mind. So, let’s guide you through the way by starting with the basics.

But, first, what is sunscreen?

Sunscreen is a proactive shield in a form of cream, lotion, or spray that protects skin before it ages, burns, or causes irritable skin woes. The skin has a natural tendency to protect itself from UV radiation, but sunscreen multiplies that timespan while you are outdoors. Generally, an ordinary sunscreen works for odd 2 hours.

How to choose sunscreen correctly?

By applying sunscreen, regularly, you may fight underlying causes and prevent signs of early aging. Learn how to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type in a nutshell.

Read up on SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

Every sunscreen comes with a certain SPF factor. SPF basically measures how much time a skin type takes to burn in the sun. For instance, if your skin burns or feels tingly after 10 minutes of exposure to the sun, then SPF 30, then will work for 10 x 30 = 300 minutes alone on the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). On the other hand, UVA rays are responsible for darkening and hyperpigmentation of the skin (dermis).

Consider your skin type

By considering, we mean to understand how to buy sunscreen for dry skin, oily skin or sensitive skin. All skin types require a formula which feels comfortable on the skin as one has to reapply the layer after every 2 hours irrespective of the SPF. On how to choose the right sunscreen, start with your skin type which proceeds to undo the sun damage.

Sensitive skin – Physical sunscreen with natural ingredients

Oily skin – Non-comedogenic sunscreen with a lightweight texture

Dry skin – Mineral sunscreen with a moisturising formula

Check the broad-spectrum

Broad-spectrum means the sunscreen protects your skin from potential UVA and UVB rays. Both the rays are individually responsible for skin damage, skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, etc. So, make sure to check “broad-spectrum” printed on the label before you buy sunscreen for the face.

Look for active ingredients

Physical sunscreens have natural ingredients – zinc oxide, titanium dioxide – these compounds are known as active ingredients. Zinc oxide is best suited for sensitive skin and titanium dioxide serves as broad spectrum filter for UV rays.

Consider your level of sun exposure

One can possibly not feel or see UV rays. But every skin type has a threshold to bear exposure to the sun before it starts to show some physical signs of irritation. So, apply and reapply sunscreen to your face and body after sufficient 30 minutes. Also, there are easy-to-miss spots like behind the ears, neck or, legs which are exposed all the time. Make sure to cover them up with dark clothes or sunscreen.

When to apply sunscreen

Sunscreens work especially well when applied 20-30 minutes before exposure to the sun. This gives the ingredients ample amount of time to absorb and later reflect the rays when one steps out or starts to sweat.
